i got the max score and the game ended abruptly, but it wouldn't let me press Z on the end scrren, so i guess it didn't save it? :(

EDIT: anything past overachiever triggers only once you hit the "lift curse" button from the shop (tested it with the 9999x medal).
however, once you hit the max combo, the game immediately ends mid-game, giving you a special gameover screen (without going through the shop).
the button to go to the menu from there doesn't seem to work, but i'm guessing that's irrelevant because the score gets updated when you lift the curse and not when you reach the menu.

TL;DR because you can't lift the curse when you reach the max combo (the game immediately ends, and even if you could, you'd need to spend combo to lift the curse and go below max), the medal for max combo is effectively broken, which explains why no one got it since

i love touhou but i still suck at it. i barely managed to get on the last stage on easy using all continues and still lost, but that's just part of the course.

heads up that there's issues with the bomb mechanics:
for one, you can't bomb while in focus (could be an issue with keyboard not registering focus, shoot and bomb all at the same time, idk)

also i think you aren't immediately invincible when bombing, or it could just be me being bad at timing, but it's worth checking out

Dogtopius responds:

I think that's a keyboard issue since I can do it fine on my end. I will also buff the bomb invulnerability too, since it seems that right now it is not enough. Thanks for playing!

the game does not actually save data, it only allows you to continue from where you left off if you go back to menu mid-game.

playing in newgrounds flashplayer doesn't let you play the game again after clearing it once (when you unlock powers), because as soon as you start a new game your character stops moving, you can't die by resetting, and you can't go back to the menu (you're permanently softlocked).

this doesn't seem to happen when playing in-browser with ruffle, so you can get the 4 post-game medals using that.

for some reason, the impossible medal doesn't always trigger correctly.
i only managed to get it after completing the game twice, then refreshing the page (which somehow saved my data), then going immediately for the secret tunnel.
i have no clue how that works

i just got baited into clicking spacebar 1000 times. good game. 9/10 because spamming spacebar is pain

Apple952 responds:

Glad that you liked it! Thanks for playing!

i think the game itself is ok, it's still more playable and responsive than some games here so that's good.

some critique:
- it's nice that the hint system is on by default, but personally i find it to be mandatory regardless. size and hue color are shades, and since the objective of the game is to get them exactly, having a number to guarantee that you got it is pretty much necessary. can't imagine getting even one point without the hint system.

- the timer is just enough to make it challenging, which is helped by the fact that you can get only one of the two counters exactly right and just scroll the other one until it goes over the correct number. basically as long as you get one of the two numbers right, you get the second one as a freebee. this is nice since having a system where it takes a second to register both correct numbers would be unfair against the timer counting down

- given the nature of the game (changing a value to be exact), there's an issue with the controls. the current ones are fine for what they need to achieve, which is change the values quickly enough. the issue comes with having to change the values by units. i kept quickly clicking back and forth because i kept changing the values by 2 instead of only 1, which is what i needed.
maybe add a separate control which lets you change each value by a single unit. maybe some control that, while it's held, lets you use the normal controls to increment/decrement only by 1? (i'm no developer so not sure how to achieve this, if possible)

anyway, not bad; though tbh the hint system alone is what saves the game from being a 0, otherwise it would probably be straight up unplayable

SplinterThePurple responds:

Thank you! :) I appreciate this review very much! I might try to work on these issues (especially the controls, as this is something that got me annoyed when playing the game). I think the separate control unit would be a great idea! Again, Thank you for this review.

is there any way to automate fire for the part where you need to clear the wave of enemies? i keep mashing the spacebar but there's so much stuff on screen that it doesn't register all my inputs and it just stops shooting while mashing. not sure if it could help but adding multiple shoot buttons so there's more chance to register the inputs might work? idk

the rest of the game was cool so i have no complaints about that but i have a hard time clearing the enemy wave because mashing spacebar sometimes doesn't shoot

SwiftVector responds:

There's no way of doing this in v1.0.0 unfortunately, but I had the idea of putting an auto-shoot option in General settings as an accessibility option so you can hold down space to fire - this is something I want to do when I make a patch.

As far as I recall there's no extra buttons for shoot other than a mapping to Right Trigger I think for game controllers. Adding Z and X as jump and shoot buttons is something I want to do in a patch, as well as just overall rebalancing that final level.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 🙂

can someone explain how you're supposed to play mina miner? i understand the rules but i barely have enough time to type a few letters before getting overrun by magma. the best i managed to do was something like 8, and that was with good rng and button mashing

edit: i guess i'm just impossibly terrible at it. i don't even know what a "speed boost" is, since by the time my brain even recognizes the first few letters showing up i'm already dead.

larrynachos responds:

My technique is to let 4 or 5 blocks build up and the do them all quickly, her speed boost is compounded.

good game. i had way more fun playing this than i thought i ever would when i started

bug report:
after beating the fifth boss and entering the mansion, if you go back to the menu and then continue, you'll spawn on a black screen.
after walking a bunch i found myself out of bounds on the map for the previous garden level. there's no other way to continue, so i had to start from scratch.

edit: on chapter 2 (lab), after acquiring the raygun, you'll find a laser sensor that opens a door, locked behind another door that opens via pressure plate. hold the button down then walk through the door to get locked on the other side to "get stuck"

on chapter 4 (office), there's a small room halfway through the level with seemingly no purpose (with a health pack inside, and nothing else).
it should be right before the loading screen that leads to the new gun for that chapter.
just stand in there for a while for the broom closet ending

that hint system is a godsend. i didn't even realize you could get interactions while sitting so i was stuck at barely over 70 for a while

Frenchie14 responds:

Glad to hear it! You're one of the first to use it!

for anyone getting stuck, one of the biggest game mechanics that seemingly isn't mentioned anywhere unless you know beforehand is that anyone but jesse can see ghosts. conversely, jesse is the only one that can "ignore" ghosts, monsters and the likes.

if you can't find something or someone to interact with, move around with anyone but jesse.
if you're somehow stuck because of a roadblock with no item that could be used to progress, try using jesse.
